Politically correctness – fair or foul?

Has PC-isms helped or harmed society? Are we so caught up in making sure that life is fair to certain groups/people that we then make life unfair to all due to the fact that we now aren’t sure when we’re saying the wrong thing? And who decided that life was “fair” at all? Interestingly Merriam-Webster online gives the following definitions for fair – 1: pleasing to the eye or mind especially because of fresh, charming, or flawless quality; 2: superficially pleasing; 6a: marked by impartiality and honesty; 8: archaic : free of obstacles. So have humans decided that life is now “fresh/charming” and should be “superficially pleasing” in an “impartial” way that is “free of obstacles”?

All it seems that we’ve done is merely changed the words that we’re “allowed” to call people/groups. Examples – broken home (now dysfunctional family), housewife (domestic engineer), insane (mentally challenged), etc.
